A lot of parents dream of taking a family ski vacation, but because of the costs involved in such a trip, they write the idea off as impossible. They figure that skiing is too expensive, and that there is no way to get around this. But actually, by following a few simple tips, you will find that a ski vacation becomes a whole lot more affordable.

Firstly, you need to know what the peak ski times are. These peak times fall during the times of year when conditions are likely to be at their best, during the coldest months. You can get much better prices on lift tickets if you plan the vacation for October or late March, instead of planning it for December or January. Also, plan to ski midweek, instead of on weekends, and schedule the trip for a time when schools are not on holiday. In this way, you can not only save money, but you can also avoid those big crowds that can be such a bother on the slopes.

Secondly, if you are thinking about taking a week-long ski trip with your family, consider skiing on only half the days. While this might seem as though you are sacrificing the fun and memories of your family vacation just to save a bit of cash, you will actually find that this is a very good idea in a number of ways. Sure, you will save money by hanging out at the condo or resort for three days and skiing on the other three days, but you are also likely to find that your whole family will be happier with this plan! If you are not a family that skis all the time, you will probably find that everyone is exhausted at the end of each day. Your family will be thrilled when they get to sleep in and drink hot cocoa all day, sitting by a fire while they play board games or watch movies or read. And once the day of rest finally comes to a close, everyone will be ready for the slopes again.

Finally, consider renting equipment at a shop in town, rather than at the mountain itself. Most towns around ski resorts are filled with shops that rent out ski equipment, and you will usually find that you can get a much better deal at such shops – especially on a week-long rental – than you could get at the mountain.

Maybe you have spent years dreaming of this family ski vacation, but you keep deciding there is no way to make it happen. If this is the case, think again! By following these tips, you just might be able to save enough money to make a ski vacation an affordable reality.
